We Remember David Kuhner

screen_10We received heartbreaking news on the morning of September 29th. Our friend, partner, and mentor David Kuhner passed away peacefully in his sleep at home in Oakland.

David was born on September 3, 1941, to Vita and Jack Kuhner — and named John David Kuhner — in Chicago, IL. His family moved to Southern California where he graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1959 and St. Mary’s College in 1963. He went on to earn a law degree from Golden Gate Law School, became a CPA in 1968, and a member of the California State Bar Association in 1972.

David worked for over 50 years in the San Francisco Bay Area, helping individuals, corporations, privately held businesses, trusts, and estates. He published numerous articles, delivered speeches on various income and estate planning topics, served as an expert witness, and was an active member of Integrated Advisory Group International, recently serving as its treasurer.

At DKC, David spent countless hours mentoring our staff and helping to manage the firm’s growth. He was dedicated to client service, often saying, “I believe we are here to be of service. Accounting is an adventure, and I get to come into the office every day and discover innovative solutions.”

Beyond his professional life, David was active in the St. Mary’s College Alumni Association, and his hobbies included gardening, cooking, and traveling the world. He was passionate about hunting and was a longtime member of Ducks Unlimited. He was a loyal member of a men’s fellowship for over 29 years where he unselfishly devoted his time to the service of others.

David is survived by his wife of 35 years, Kathleen Kuhner; his brother Larry Kuhner; his sister Barbara Kuhner; his stepmother Shirley Kuhner; his children Kevin Kuhner, Patrick Kuhner, Christopher Kuhner, Peter Kuhner, Jan Lustig, Nadja Kuhner, Francesca Kuhner Boyd, and Michael Kuhner; and his grandchildren Charlotte, Jack, Michael Patrick, Paul, Jacqueline, Jovana, Annabelle, Kieran, Calleigh, Jason, and Casey; and his nephews and nieces Andrew, Megan, Shanta, Ananda, and Liam.

A service was held for David at St. Patrick Church in San Francisco on October 6th.

We welcome you to share your memories of David in the comments section.

Thank you.
